Character Name: Sakon Shima
Age: early 20's
Canon: Sengoku Basara 4
Canon Point: After Maria leaves Sawayama Castle
Character Information:
At a point when his life hit rock bottom, Kiyooki Shima challenged Mitsunari Ishida to a one-on-one fight. For him, there was no longer a reason to live if he couldn't bet it all and put his life on the line, so he wanted to either win or be killed in combat. It's never made clear just what caused him to lose all the light in his life, but it's abundantly clear that his loss to Mitsunari was what gave it back. Mitsunari won the fight, but refused to kill Kiyooki because he saw no reason to. It had nothing to do with Mitsunari's lord, Hideyoshi Toyotomi's, goals and if it had nothing to do with Hideyoshi, Mitsunari had absolutely no interest in it. That single-minded devotion was an inspiration to Kiyooki, who immediately became similarly fixated on Mitsunari. He set aside his given name, declaring himself to now be “Sakon.” Mitsunari was Hideyoshi's sawan, his left arm and source of strength. Therefore, Sakon would now be “close to the left.” The left arm's left arm, so to speak.
No one asked him to do to this, but at that point, there was no getting rid of him.
Sakon established himself Mitsunari's chief retainer through sheer persistence. It didn't hurt that he was already a competent fighter and eager to better himself and expand his knowledge of battle tactics. He wasn't necessarily smart enough to be hugely successful at the latter, but he didn't let that discourage him. In the odd little family that core generals of the Toyotomi army made together, he was either the annoying little brother or, well, the family dog. Probably the dog. Hideyoshi and Hanbei valued his loyalty and his effectiveness as a member of their vanguard. Yoshitsugu, Sakon's polar opposite in terms of personality, wanted very badly to hate him, but found himself grudgingly appreciative of him. Sakon never challenged Yoshitsugu's place at Mitsunari's side and instead admired him and respected him as a senior general. As for Mitsunari, he was both exasperated by and appreciative of Sakon's presence, though it was generally only the exasperation that got expressed. In general, the only member of the Toyotomi army to express any sort of positive emotion on a regular basis was Sakon.
So it's not really a surprise that there are very, very few routes that go well for them and so many that go so horribly wrong.
Sengoku Basara 4 is a game with many characters and multiple routes per character. The actual game timeline is very timey-wimey and the various character routes can't be reconciled into one cohesive timeline. I'll be using Sakon's normal route, Yoshitsugu's normal route, and Maria's drama route for Sakon's background in Ryslig. This places him with his role in the Toyotomi Army and his relationships with his fellow generals there already established. It also includes the day he was left in charge of Mitsunari's castle and decided to turn it into a gambling den (more on this in the personality section.) It's also before things start to go Horribly Wrong for the Toyotomi and before Sakon establishes his friendship/rivalry with Katsuie Shibata.
Personality:
Sakon is a very outgoing, friendly and energetic guy. He's extremely talkative and has a tendency to jabber a mile a minute at people, even total strangers, whether it looks like a good idea or not. For example, he walks straight up to an enemy general on the battlefield and starts asking him his name and age and hobbies like he's hitting on him at a bar while massive carnage goes on all around them. That lack of boundaries is pretty typical for him. He just plows forward through life with a smile on his face and he'll drag anyone along with him that wants to come along for the ride. He's also earnest and sincere to a fault. There really isn't a deceitful bone in his body and what you see is exactly what you'll get. Sure, he'll try to deny it if, say, he's caught red-handed gambling when he's not supposed to be, but he'll also fess up to it immediately when called on it. If he talks about his feelings or his goals, you can be certain it's coming 100% from the heart. And he'll tell you about those whether he really should or not.
Sakon's tendency to rush headlong through life can be a bit of a detriment for him. He's energetic, yes, but with that comes a tendency to be impulsive and reckless. He tends not to think things through a lot of the time and often finds himself blindsided when he screws something up. The fact that, in general, he isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer doesn't help matters. He moves on pure id at times, which leads to such intelligent decisions as turning the castle he's supposed to be guarding into a gambling den and inviting over a neighboring warlord for a party (which, for some reason, involves said warlord's army dressing up in vegetable costumes.) Sometimes it's better not to ask. Just accept that he's going to be in big trouble when his boss gets home and finds giant dice and carrot suits strewn all over the place and Sakon unconscious right in front of the castle keep because someone fought their way through the entire mess.
Sakon's love of gambling is something else that can be a blessing and a curse for him. He'll stake a lot on the roll of the dice and looks at his whole life as one big gamble. He evaluates his choices like it's some sort of dice or card game and more often or not decides to make an all or nothing bet. If it pays off, it pays off. If it doesn't pay off, it doesn't pay off and he'll make the most of whatever happens. Sure, there's usually a chance that the consequences will be fatal, but he's very accepting of that and so lives his life like every day could be his last. It's a strange sort of optimism, but that's what it is as its core. Even if the worst is fated to happen, he can make the most of it and find a way to face it with a genuine smile. In a way, this shows a more serious side of Sakon. He's a man who hit rock bottom and found himself aimless and lost in life, so now that he's found a reason to live, he's giving it his all so that he'll never feel that way again. (And neither will anyone else if he can help it.)
The reason to live that Sakon has gone all in on is Mitsunari Ishida and the Toyotomi army. Mitsunari gave him a place and a purpose and he's decided to devote his entire life to serving him. Mitsunari is Hideyoshi Toyotomi's “left arm,” the general that will be his strength. Sakon decides he wants to be Mitsunari's left arm (whether Mitsunari likes it or not) and gives everything he has to that cause. He idolizes Mitsunari and hangs on his every word. Even the slightest bit of praise is like gold to him. Mitsunari is a dour and antisocial person on the best of days, but even he warms up to Sakon eventually. It's hard not to when you have someone that loyal and determined to do everything they can for you. In his anime route, Sakon goes as far as to let Mitsunari kill him to try to alleviate his fury over Hideyoshi's death. This selfless tendency to put his life on the line for others and willingly sacrifice himself for them is clear across many of his interactions with people he cares about. He also decides to walk straight into the most dangerous place in the country to face an impossible opponent just because he thinks it will get Katsuie's confidence back. While he'd prefer to survive, you can tell that self-preservation is a low priority compared to helping someone else.
There's also a great deal of compassion in Sakon's heart for people who remind him of himself. It's at the times when he's reminded of what it took to get where he is today that Sakon is at his most serious and contemplative. He isn't without his moments of introspection and self-reflection. Looking back on the despair of his past is what strengthens his resolve to make the best of his present and future. When he sees the emptiness in Katsuie's eyes, he recognizes it as the same the plagued him before he entered Mitsunari's service. Because of this, he immediately attaches himself to Katsuie as both a friend and a rival. He can see that what Katsuie needs is the same thing he did: a purpose, a way to feel like there's something worth continuing on for. That's why he makes a little show of proving to him that even the tiniest victory is still a victory, that winning one dice roll is enough of a foundation to build on. And then he suggests going to kill the shogun as a way of distracting Katsuie from killing Sakon's boss's boss, but...well...that's Sakon for you. Katsuie, like Mitsunari, isn't really sure what to make of the attention and of Sakon's forceful attempts to make himself part of his life, but it really is difficult not to get swept along when Sakon decides he wants to do something.
